Free Quake upgrade comes to Steam and more

quake remasterWithout any fanfare, news, or information Bethesda has released a completely free upgrade for legendary Quake 1. Free upgrade is automatically applied to all users who possess the original game and it has already been rolled out.

What has changed for good?

New textures, effects, and resolutions are one thing that will come first into your focus when you start the game. From the moment game is started it feels and looks like a game you remember from a long time ago. Models are also upgraded with a higher polygon count.

Another thing that will hit you right away is the legendary OST by Trent Reznor in its full glory. If you have the original Quake and played it you will know that OST was missing from the Steam release and having it fully back is a great feature. I would argue that placing just OST alone in the steam release is enough for people to play it again since it adds so much atmosphere.

Deathmatch and other multiplayer goodies are all here as well and there is a completely free new episode in the game with several levels. Yes, you get a free Quake upgrade in HD with an extra episode completely free.

The bad side of Quake coin

So this might come as a purist or obsessive nit-picking but there were two things that I, personally am not a fan of and have noticed during my gameplay. Please know that this is personal preference and by no other chance reflects the quality of the game itself but I just had to talk about it.

Quake remake is made in a new engine and as such dynamic and gunplay feel different from the original, granted they have done the best they could to replicate the authentic feeling of the original game but there are parts of the game where I have felt that simply put, it feels different.

Another thing is also tied to technology and the overall game is somewhat a little brighter and in some areas little softer in dark areas. Like I said this is purely personal preference and might come as nitpicking but I preferred the darker and grittier look of the original game. Darkplaces, the free custom-made upgrade did this in my opinion better.

Setting a Static IP Address in Windows 10
If you are having issues with your network connection and you have it configured to DHCP, then you shouldn’t have any issues in figuring your IP address out. If you want to prevent conflicts between network devices and enable their easy management, then you have to set a static IP address in your Windows 10 computer, worry not for this post will show you how it’s done. The IP addresses for computers are usually configured to the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP automatically by the respective router. This is really convenient since the devices instantly connect to your network and through this, you can save yourself the trouble of configuring the IP address for each new device manually. However, there’s a shortfall in the process – the computer’s IP address can change every now and then. Moreover, you might also find it a lot easier to share a printer or configure a Port forwarding when you set a static IP address. There are three ways to do it – you can set it via Control Panel or Windows Settings or using Windows PowerShell. For more details, follow the options provided below.

Option 1 – Set a static IP address via Control Panel

  • Right-click on the network or Wi-Fi icon located in the Taskbar.
  • Then select the “Open Network and Internet settings” option from the given list of options.
  • Next, go to Wi-Fi settings and scroll down until you see the “Related Settings” section. Here, click on the “Change adapter options” link which will open a new window that will direct you to the Network Connections section of the Control Panel.
  • After that, right-click on the network connection you want to set a static IP address for and then select the Properties option.
  • Then select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) under the Networking tab and click the Properties button.
  • Now switch the selector to the “Use the following IP address” option and make the entry for the following fields that correspond to your network setup.
    • IP address (Find it using the “ipconfig /all” command)
    • Subnet Mask (On a home network, it is 255.255.255.0)
    • Default Gateway (It is your router’s IP address.)
  • Then check the “Validate settings upon exit” option to help Windows check your new IP address quickly as well as the other relevant information to make sure that it’s working.
  • Once you’re done, click the OK button and close the network adapter’s properties window.

Option 2 – Assign Static IP address using Settings

  • First, click on the gear icon for Settings and select the Network & Internet tab.
  • Next, select Wi-Fi > Current connection where you’ll have to select the network connection your computer is connected to.
  • After that, scroll down until you reach the IP settings section and then click the Edit button.
  • Now click the drop-down arrow when the IP settings window pops up and select the Manual option.
  • Now turn on the IPv4 toggle switch and set the static IP address. You also have to set the Subnet prefix length (subnet mask). For instance, if your subnet mask is “255.255.255.0”, then the subnet prefix length in bits should be 24.
  • Afterward, configure the Default Gateway address and the Preferred DNS address and then save the changes you’ve made.

Option 3 – Assign the static IP address using Windows PowerShell

  • In the Start Search, type “PowerShell” and right-click on Windows PowerShell from the search results to open PowerShell with admin privileges.
  • After that, enter this command to view your computer’s current network configuration: Get-NetIPConfiguration
  • Next, take note of the following information:
    • InterfaceIndex
    • IPv4Address
    • IPv4DefaultGateway
    • DNSServer
  • Once you’re done, execute this command to set a static IP address: New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 15 -IPAddress 192.168.29.34 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.29.1
  • Afterward, change the default gateway with the default gateway address of your network and make sure that you change the InterfaceIndex number with the one that corresponds to your adapter and IPAddress with the IP address you want to assign to your computer.
  • Now execute this command to assign a DNS server address: Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 4 -ServerAddresses 10.1.2.1
  • Finally, save the changes you’ve made and restart your computer.

There are cases when you encounter some issues while updating your Windows 10 computer. One of these issues is the error 0x80240034. This particular error is a Windows Update Error that appears on the Windows Update pane every time an update fails to install. When this happens, your Windows Update will only get stuck at 1% and nothing happens afterward and eventually fails. If you click on the View Installed Update History, you will see the error code 0x80240034 for the failed updates. You will see this error each time you try to update your Windows PC. Take note that this issue doesn’t only happen to a specific version of the Windows Update but on various different Windows builds based on many users. What’s more, is that some users are also seeing a different error code when their Windows Update fails but they still end up seeing the error code 0x80240034 when they check the Windows Update history. Option 2 – Update Windows via ISO file

If option 1 didn’t work for you, you can try this second option of updating your Windows 10 computer using an ISO file which means that you will have to create a Windows 10 bootable media and use it to install the latest Windows 10 version. The most user reported that this option works and the reason why it does have something to do with the Windows Update client since the Windows Updates downloaded from the regular Windows Update client seems to create issues such as the error 0x80240034. However, issues like this one don’t occur when the very same Windows Updates are downloaded and installed via an ISO file. Take note that when using a Windows ISO file, you will be asked to choose what you want to do with the previous settings and apps. A lot of users opted for the “Not to keep the old Windows settings” option which has resolved the issue. So if you want to keep the previous settings then you must try to update Windows first while keeping the old settings. Option 3 – Disable Automatic Paging File Size Management

  • Right-click on This PC located on your desktop.
  • Next, click on Properties and then click on the Advanced System Settings.
  • Go to the Advanced tab and then click on the Settings button under the Performance section.
  • Afterward, a new mini window will appear and from there, go to the Advanced tab.
  • Then click the Change button under the Virtual Memory section. Once you do, another mini window will appear.
  • Now uncheck the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” option.
  • After that, you have to increase the Page File size by doubling the amount of memory allocated by default in the text field. For instance, the paging size given is a minimum of 16MB and so you have to change it to 32MB. And since the recommended value is 1907MB, you can make its maximum size around 4000MB. By doing so, it will allocate more space for paging into individual drivers.
  • Now click OK, close all the open windows and then restart your PC.

Option 4 – Update the Device Drivers

Updating the Device drivers can also help you fix the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Blue Screen error. To do so, follow the steps below.
  • Tap the Win + R keys to launch Run.
  • Type in devmgmt.msc into the box and tap Enter or click OK to open the Device Manager.
  • After that, a list of device drivers will be displayed. If you see a red or yellow sign that shows up against the driver, right-click on the driver and select “Update Driver Software”.

And as time passes, they have advanced quite a bit and now it’s common to find USB sticks with a capacity of 32GB, 64GB, or even 128GB. And since they now have large capacities, USB storage devices are often used for storing backups of system data as well as creating an image. However, there are times when you might encounter an error message while trying to create a backup or image on your USB device. The error message states:
“The drive is not a valid backup location.”
One of the causes of this problem is that Windows was not able to recognize the USB drives as a valid backup location since USB storage devices weren’t previously large enough to store system images. To fix this error, here are some possible solutions that might help.

Option 1 – Try creating a sub-folder in the USB drive and backup all the images there

The first thing you can try to do is to create a sub-folder on your USB device. This is one good way you can bypass the USB drive limitation. How? Refer to the steps below.
  • First, right-click on the USB storage device and select Format.
  • Next, select NTFS as the File System and check the box next to Quick Format.
  • After that, click on Start to initiate the formatting process.
  • Once the formatting process is completed, open the USB drive and right-click anywhere inside its main drive window, and then select New > Folder.
  • Then name the folder to be created as “Image (or anything you please)”.
  • Afterward, right-click on the folder and select Properties.
  • From there, go to the Sharing tab and click on Share.
  • Now check if the Permission level on the System owner which should be your username is labeled as “Owner”.
  • Then try to back up your files again using your USB drive while keeping the sub-folder as the backup location.

Option 2 – Update the USB Controller Drivers

  • First, click the Start button and type “device manager”.
  • Then click on the “Device Manager” from the search results to open it.
  • From there, look for the “Universal Serial Bus controllers” option and then right-click on each one of the USB drivers and select the Update Driver from the menu.
  • Restart your PC and then click the “Search automatically for updated driver software” option.
You also have the option to update the motherboard and the USB driver from the manufacturer’s official website.

Option 3 – Run CHKDSK utility to check the drive for errors

When it comes to some issues concerning the hard drive or removable devices, there is a utility in Windows that might help which is called “chkdsk”. To use it, follow the steps below.
  • Tap the Win + S keys to open the Search box.
  • Then type “command prompt” in the field and from the search results that appear, right-click on Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
  • After opening an elevated command prompt, copy and paste the following command and hit Enter:
CHKDSK [volume [[path] filename]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/C] [: size]]
Note: In the command given above, “[/F]” will try to fix the system errors while “[/R]” will be the one to fix the bad sectors.
  • Now if you are prompted to run CHKDSK after your reboot your PC, just tap Y and reboot your PC.
  • If CHKDSK is not able to find any errors, tap the Win + E keys and navigate the access window. From there, right-click on the concerned drive and click on Properties.
  • After opening Properties, click on the tab Tools and then click on the “Check” button under the Error-checking section.
  • Wait until the process is completed and then restart your computer.
