There are times when you might notice that the Drive letter from the File Explorer is missing, right after you install an update in your Windows 10 computer. So if you are facing this issue right now, then you’ve come to the right place as this post will guide you on what to do to fix it.
In case you don’t know, a drive letter represents a single alphabetic character which is through A-Z typically. This could be assigned to a physical disk partition, floppy disk drive or the removal device/ CD-ROM/ mapping network drive in your PC.
In most cases, the drive letter “C:” is assigned to the first disk partition where the running Windows is installed. Thus, if the assigned letter is missing from either the Disk Management or the Windows File Explorer, it could result in inconveniences or will leave the partition inaccessible. To fix this problem, you can try to show the missing drive letters manually or make sure that the drive has a drive letter assigned in the Disk Management as well as assign the letter using a tweak in the Windows Registry. If the original letter is already taken by a new drive, you need to change the letter of that new drive to another available letter.
Then allocate the released letter of the targeted drive.
Option 3 – Try assigning the letter using a Registry tweak
The next thing you can do to fix the problem is to assign the letter using a tweak in the Windows Registry but before you do that, make sure that you create a System Restore point first, after that, follow these steps:

From there, check if a device is shown as being mounted at the specific drive letter and then right-click on that drive letter.

Expand the section of the Sound, video, and Game Controllers.
And then from the drop-down menu, select the Update Driver option and follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest version of the driver.
Then also click on the option, “Search automatically for updated driver software.
Restart your PC after the installation.
Note: If updating the Audio driver didn’t work, you can go to the website of your PC manufacturer and look for the support section where you can download the drivers for your computer. You just need to take note of your PC’s correct model and model number so you can find the appropriate driver.
Option 3 – Try removing and reinstalling the sound card
If option 1 didn’t work, you can also try to remove and reinstall the sound card of your computer to fix the high-pitched sound coming from your computer’s speakers.
To get started, tap on the Windows key + R to pull up the Run box.
Next, type in “MSC” in the box to open the Device Manager.
After opening the Device Manager, go to the “Sound, video, and game controllers” option then right-click on the sound card.
Finally, click on Uninstall and tick the box with a label that says, “Delete the driver software for this device” and close the Device Manager.
Restart your computer and check if the problem’s fixed or not.
Note: After you restart your computer, the system should reinstall the speaker automatically. But if it does not reinstall, you can follow the aforementioned steps again to go to the Device Manager. From there, go back to “Sound, video, and Game Controllers” and right-click on the sound card. After that, enabling the sound card and restart your computer once more. That should fix the problem.
Option 4 – Try updating the Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Control driver
If the three options given above didn’t fix the error, you might want to try updating the Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Control driver. To do so, follow these steps:
Tap the Win + X keys and select the Device Manager option from the menu.
Next, scroll down and click on the System Devices option and select the “Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Control” option.
Then right-click on it and select the “Update driver” option.
After a couple of seconds, the wizard will look for an available driver and will automatically update it.
Restart your computer and see if the error is now fixed.
If you are having issues with your network connection and you have it configured to DHCP, then you shouldn’t have any issues in figuring your IP address out. If you want to prevent conflicts between network devices and enable their easy management, then you have to set a static IP address in your Windows 10 computer, worry not for this post will show you how it’s done.
The IP addresses for computers are usually configured to the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP automatically by the respective router. This is really convenient since the devices instantly connect to your network and through this, you can save yourself the trouble of configuring the IP address for each new device manually. However, there’s a shortfall in the process – the computer’s IP address can change every now and then.
Moreover, you might also find it a lot easier to share a printer or configure a Port forwarding when you set a static IP address. There are three ways to do it – you can set it via Control Panel or Windows Settings or using Windows PowerShell. For more details, follow the options provided below.
Option 1 – Set a static IP address via Control Panel
Right-click on the network or Wi-Fi icon located in the Taskbar.
Then select the “Open Network and Internet settings” option from the given list of options.
Next, go to Wi-Fi settings and scroll down until you see the “Related Settings” section. Here, click on the “Change adapter options” link which will open a new window that will direct you to the Network Connections section of the Control Panel.
After that, right-click on the network connection you want to set a static IP address for and then select the Properties option.
Then select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) under the Networking tab and click the Properties button.
Now switch the selector to the “Use the following IP address” option and make the entry for the following fields that correspond to your network setup.
IP address (Find it using the “ipconfig /all” command)
Subnet Mask (On a home network, it is 255.255.255.0)
Default Gateway (It is your router’s IP address.)
Then check the “Validate settings upon exit” option to help Windows check your new IP address quickly as well as the other relevant information to make sure that it’s working.
Once you’re done, click the OK button and close the network adapter’s properties window.
Option 2 – Assign Static IP address using Settings
First, click on the gear icon for Settings and select the Network & Internet tab.
Next, select Wi-Fi > Current connection where you’ll have to select the network connection your computer is connected to.
After that, scroll down until you reach the IP settings section and then click the Edit button.
Now click the drop-down arrow when the IP settings window pops up and select the Manual option.
Now turn on the IPv4 toggle switch and set the static IP address. You also have to set the Subnet prefix length (subnet mask). For instance, if your subnet mask is “255.255.255.0”, then the subnet prefix length in bits should be 24.
Afterward, configure the Default Gateway address and the Preferred DNS address and then save the changes you’ve made.
Option 3 – Assign the static IP address using Windows PowerShell
In the Start Search, type “PowerShell” and right-click on Windows PowerShell from the search results to open PowerShell with admin privileges.
After that, enter this command to view your computer’s current network configuration: Get-NetIPConfiguration
Next, take note of the following information:
InterfaceIndex
IPv4Address
IPv4DefaultGateway
DNSServer
Once you’re done, execute this command to set a static IP address: New-NetIPAddress -InterfaceIndex 15 -IPAddress 192.168.29.34 -PrefixLength 24 -DefaultGateway 192.168.29.1
Afterward, change the default gateway with the default gateway address of your network and make sure that you change the InterfaceIndex number with the one that corresponds to your adapter and IPAddress with the IP address you want to assign to your computer.
Now execute this command to assign a DNS server address: Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 4 -ServerAddresses 10.1.2.1
Finally, save the changes you’ve made and restart your computer.

Option 1 – Run the Check Disk utility
The first thing you can do to fix the REGISTRY_ERROR Blue Screen error is to run the Check Disk utility. How? Follow these steps:
In the Windows Search box, type “command prompt” and from the search results, right-click on Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
After opening Command Prompt, type this command and tap Enter: chkdsk <Drive Letter>: /f /r /x /b
The command you entered will start to check for errors and fix them automatically. Else, it will throw an error message saying, “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like the schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)”.
Tap the Y key to schedule Disk Check the next time your computer restarts.
Option 2 – Run the Blue Screen Troubleshooter
The Blue Screen troubleshooter is a built-in tool in Windows 10 that helps users in fixing BSOD errors like REGISTRY_ERROR. It can be found in the Settings Troubleshooters page. To use it, refer to these steps:
Tap the Win + I keys to open the Settings panel.
Then go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
From there, look for the option called “Blue Screen” on your right-hand side and then click the “Run the troubleshooter” button to run the Blue Screen Troubleshooter and then follow the next on-screen options. Note that you might have to boot your PC into Safe Mode.
Option 3 – Run System File Checker
Open Command Prompt with admin privileges.
After that, execute this command: sfc /scannow
Once the scan is completed, restart your computer and then check if the REGISTRY_ERROR is now fixed.
Option 4 – Run the DISM tool
You can try running the Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management or DISM tool to fix the REGISTRY_ERROR Blue Screen error. Using this built-in tool, you have various options such as the “/ScanHealth”, “/CheckHealth”, and “/RestoreHealth”.
Open the Command Prompt with admin privileges.
Then type in the following commands and make sure to hit Enter right after you type each one of them:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Do not close the window if the process takes a while as it will probably take a few minutes to finish. Once it’s done, restart your computer.
Option 5 – Reset your computer
Tap the Win key or click on the Start button located in the Taskbar.
Then click on the Power button at the bottom right portion of the screen.
Next, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and then click on Restart. This will restart your Pc into the Advanced Startup options.
Note: Once you have access to the Advanced Startup options, you have to go to the setting which allows you to Reset your Windows 10 PC. All you have to do is select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC to reach the following screen
Afterward, select either the “Keep my files” option and then proceed to the next on-screen instructions that follow to reset your Windows 10 computer without losing your files.
Option 6 – Try to perform repair install by creating a Windows 10 installation media
Click this link and then click the Download Tool Now button.
Next, click the “Use the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file)…” option and follow the next given instructions on the screen.
Now select the ISO file option in step 5.
After that, you should now have an ISO file.
Next, go to the location where you’ve downloaded the ISO file.
Then right-click on the Windows 10 ISO file and select the Open with option and then select File Explorer.
Now click on “setup.exe” and follow the next instructions that appear on the screen. When asked, you have to select either Nothing (clean install) or Keep personal files only option. Take note that you must not select the “Keep personal files, apps, and Windows settings”.
