How to Fix fltmgr.sys in Windows 10

A few days ago we celebrated fixing of months-long PrintNightmare vulnerability by Microsoft, sadly a new bug and issue have been found. Firstly discovered Microsoft stated:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Windows Print Spooler service improperly performs privileged file operations. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

A few days ago, Microsoft officially released a patch that was supposed to finally fix it. As you might recall this vulnerability was present for quite some time, Microsoft's solution after a long struggle was to elevate certain privileges to administrator account only and remove user accounts from managing printers. It complicated things a little bit but it was stated payoff was worth it. The new issue now is that on a system that already had accounts created and set, old accounts still can hijack the system, patch issues address only accounts that are created after the fix is administrated, old ones can still do whatever they want. Once again of course Microsoft has stated that until it is again resolved you should again disable the Print Spooler service as a temporary workaround.

One of the most useful utilities for advanced users in Windows is the Windows command line or Command Prompt. It is efficient in fixing system files, checking the disk for errors as well as other intensive tasks that are made convenient using this. One of the tasks you can carry out using Command Prompt is repairing the Windows bootup process if it encounters any issues. However, if you tried running the “bootrec/fixboot” command and you receive an error message saying, “Element not found”, read on as this post will guide you in fixing this error. • After that, click on Repair your computer located at the bottom-left portion of the window.
• Then select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
• After you open the Command Prompt window, execute the following command:

bootrec /fixboot

• Afterward, enter the next command below to rename the BCD file:

ren BCD BCD.bak

• Next, type the following command and make sure to replace “b:” with the letter of your bootable drive attached to your computer.

bcdboot c:Windows /l en-us /s b: /f ALL

• Now, wait until the process is completed and restart your computer to successfully apply the changes made.

Option 2 – Try assigning the drive letter to the EFI partition

• Tap the Win + X keys or right-click on the Start button and click on Command Prompt (Admin) to open Command Prompt with admin privileges.
• Then type the following command to start the Diskpart utility:

diskpart

• After that, if you receive a UAC prompt, just click on Yes to proceed.
• Next, type the following command to list all the volumes created on your PC including both types of partitions that are visible to a normal user in the File Explorer as well as the ones created by Windows 10 by default which helps it in storing the boot files and other important system files:

list volume

• Now type the following command to select the desired volume:

select volume number

• Then type the following command to assign a letter to the selected volume:

assign letter=<LETTER>

Note: Make sure to replace “<LETTER>” with the letter you want to allocate to that partition. Afterward, it will assign a letter to the selected volume.

• Reboot your PC to apply the changes made.

Option 3 – Try setting the System Partition to Active

Like the first given option, you also have to make sure that you have a bootable Windows 10 USB drive before you proceed to set the System Partition to Active. Once you have it covered, refer to these steps:

• Boot your computer using the bootable Windows 10 USB drive.
• Next, click Next when you get to the Welcome Screen.
• Then click on Repair your computer located at the bottom left part of the window and select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
• After opening Command Prompt, type the following command and hit Enter to start the Diskpart utility. It is a command line-based utility just like Command Prompt but has a UAC prompt once you provoke it. So if you encounter a UAC prompt, just click on Yes to proceed.

diskpart

• Now type the following command:

list disk

• From there, select your primary disk by typing the following command:

select disk number

• After that, list all the partitions on the selected disk by entering the following command:

list partition

• The command you just entered will list all the partitions created on your PC including both types of partitions that are visible to a normal user in the File Explorer as well as the ones created by Windows 10 by default which helps it in storing the boot files and other important system files.
• Now type the following command to select the partition that is usually around 100 MB in size:

select partition number

• Finally, type the following command to mark the partition active:

active

• Then type the “exit” command to exit the disk part utility.

• Next, rename the “Default” folder inside the path you were redirected to. For instance, you can rename it to “Default-old”.
• After that, install the Chrome browser again.

Option 6 – Try to flush the DNS and reset the TCP/IP

There are instances when a network goes into haywire because of a bad DNS. Thus, a bad DNS might be the one that’s causing this headache so it’s time for you to reset the entire network to resolve the issue. To reset the network, here’s what you have to do:

• Click the Start button and type in “command prompt” in the field.
• From the search results that appear, right-click on Command Prompt and select the “Run as administrator” option.
• After opening Command Prompt, you have to type each one of the commands listed below. Just make sure that after you type each command, you hit Enter
  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /all
  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • ipconfig /renew
  • netsh int ip set dns
  • netsh winsock reset

After you key in the commands listed above, the DNS cache will be flushed and the Winsock, as well as the TCP/IP, will reset.

Resetting Windows will delete all software and user accounts installed in the operating system and will reinstall a fresh Windows. 1. Boot your device using a Windows installation USB key or DVD. NOTE: If the device is able to boot the system, you can reset Windows without using a Windows installation USB key or DVD. You just have to boot the device then navigate to Settings in the Start button. Choose Update & Recovery then select Recovery found on the left pane. Choose Reset this PC option then select Go back to an earlier build and Advanced startup. Select Get Started button found in the Reset this PC tab. 2. Depending on your device’s condition, you can either select Keep my files or Remove everything. Both options will remove all applications installed in the device and will revert to default settings. 3. Choose either Just remove my files or Remove files and clean the drive depending on the situation. If you choose the Remove files and clean the drive option, the procedure will take longer as it will erase all the files permanently. In this case, deleted files cannot be recovered. However, if you don’t want to remove files permanently, select Just remove my files. 4. Once you’ve decided how to reset your system, click on Next once the Warning screen appears. Afterward, choose Reset once prompted. When the process completed, click on Continue.

RD /S <folder path>

Note: In the given command, “RD” is the command that removes the folder from the directory, while “/S” removes all of its sub-folders and files. On the other hand, if you also use the “/Q” parameter, you won’t see the “Y/N” confirmation but if you didn’t use it, then simply tap the Y button to proceed.

4. Press CTRL + SHIFT + 2 to run command prompt
5. Type in sfc /scannow and press ENTER
6. Wait for the whole process to finish and then reboot your system

4. Reinstall the problematic game

1. Local group policy editor solution

   • Press ⊞ WINDOWS + R to open the Run dialog.
   • In the Run dialog box type gpedit.msc and press ENTER to open Group Policy Editor.
   • Inside the Local Group Policy Editor, navigate to the path below:
   Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Polices > Security Options
   • On the right pane, double-click on Accounts: Block Microsoft accounts to edit its properties.
   • Under Local Security Setting tab, click on the drop-down and select This policy is disabled.
   • Click Apply > OK to save the changes.
   • Exit Group Policy Editor.

2. Registry editor solution

   As always, it is highly recommended to make a backup of the registry editor just in case that something goes wrong.
   • Press ⊞ WINDOWS + R to open the Run dialog.
   • In the Run dialog box, type regedit and hit ENTER to open Registry Editor.
   • Navigate to the registry key path below:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
   • At the location, on the right pane, identify the NoConnectedUser key. The key value might be set to either 1 or 3.
   • Now, double-click the NoConnectedUser entry to edit its properties.
   • Input 0 in the Value data field and hit Enter to save the change.
