Fixing the Machine Check Exception Blue Screen Error in Windows 10

BSOD or Blue Screen of Death errors are one of the toughest issues you can encounter in Windows 10 as well as the hardest ones to resolve as they simply shut the system down or restart it abruptly and claims that it isn’t possible to boot Windows again.   • After that, a list of device drivers will be displayed. Look for the device driver you and then select either “Update driver” or “Uninstall device”. And if you find any “Unknown device”, you need to update it as well.
  • Select the “Search automatically for updated driver software” option and then follow the instructions to complete the process.
  • If you have chosen to uninstall the driver, follow the screen options to complete the process and then restart your PC.
  • Connect the device and Scan for hardware changes – you can see this option under Device Manager > Action.

Option 2 – Try running the Blue Screen Troubleshooter

The Blue Screen troubleshooter is a built-in tool in Windows 10 that can be found on the Settings Troubleshooters page. To use it, refer to these steps:

  • Tap the Win + I keys to open the Settings panel.
  • Then go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • From there, look for the option called “Blue Screen” on your right-hand side and then click the “Run the troubleshooter” button to run the Blue Screen Troubleshooter and then follow the next on-screen options. Note that you might have to boot your PC into Safe Mode.

Option 3 – Try running the System File Checker

System File Checker or SFC is a built-in command utility that helps in restoring corrupted files as well as missing files. It replaces bad and corrupted system files with good system files that might be causing the Machine Check Exception BSOD error. To run the SFC command, follow the steps given below.

  • Tap Win + R to launch Run.
  • Type in cmd in the field and tap Enter.
  • After opening Command Prompt, type in sfc /scannow

The command will start a system scan which will take a few whiles before it finishes. Once it’s done, you could get the following results:

  1. Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
  2. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
  3. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Option 4 – Run the Startup Repair

In the Blue Screen where the Machine Check Exception error is displayed, tap the F8 key to go to the Startup Settings where you can find Startup Repair and then run it. Note that this is a must-try option especially if you are unable to start your computer and if you can use your computer for a few moments.

Option 5 – Run the DISM tool

There are cases when the Machine Check Exception error is caused by the Windows System Image so you need to repair it using the DISM or Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management tool. The DISM tool is another command-line tool in the Windows operating system that could help users fix various corrupted system files. To use it, follow these steps:

  • Open the Command Prompt as admin.
  • Then type in this command: Dism /Online /CheckHealth
  • Do not close the window if the process takes a while as it will probably take a few minutes to finish.

Option 6 – Try resetting the BIOS

If you have made some modifications in the BIOS that might have caused this error, you have to revert those changes to resolve the issue. On the other hand, if you have made a couple of changes and you do not remember which is which, you might have to reset the BIOS.

Option 7 – Try resetting Windows 10

Upgrading your Windows computer may not always go as expected as you could end up getting some error messages along the way. One of the error messages you can encounter is the “STOP 0XC000021A or STATUS_SYSTEM_PROCESS_TERMINATED” error. This error indicates that is some security issue within the Windows operating system. It could be that the system files have an issue and they have been modified incorrectly. Although this does not necessarily mean that malware is behind the modification, one of the applications you installed recently might have something to do with the problem. Option 1 – Uninstall programs you installed lately

  • In the search box, type in “control” and then click on Control Panel (desktop app) among the search results.
  • After that, select Programs and Features from the list which will give you a list of all the programs installed on your computer.

Note: If you have downloaded the app from the Windows Store, you can simply right-click on it from the application list and then uninstall it.

Option 2 – Perform System Restore

If you are already in the Advanced Startup Options, just directly select System Restore and proceed with the next steps. And if you have just booted your PC into Safe Mode, refer to the steps below.
  • Tap the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
  • After that, type in “sysdm.cpl” in the field and tap Enter.
  • Next, go to the System Protection tab then click the System Restore button. This will open a new window where you have to select your preferred System Restore point.

The commands you entered should rebuild the BCD and repair MBR.

Option 5 – Run the CHKDSK utility

  1. Boot from microSSD with the latest Raspberry Pi OS on it.
  2. Update firmware and OS using the terminal by typing sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade sudo rpi-update
  3. Reboot your Pi
  4. Install the latest version of bootloader again using the terminal with the command sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d – a
  5. Reboot Pi
  6. Launch raspi-config on your Pi via terminal with sudo raspi-config
  7. Select option 3 (Boot options – Configure options for start-up) from boot options
  8. Select Boot ROM version and press ENTER
  9. Select latest and then OK
  10. Select NO when prompted to reset boot ROM to defaults on the latest version boot ROM selected screen. Press OK
  11. Select Boot order and press ENTER
  12. Select USB Boot and click on OK and remove microSD card from Pi
  13. Select Finish and click on NO when prompted to reboot

Creating Windows 11 installation image for Pi 4

In order to install Windows 11 on our Pi, we must create an installation image, follow the steps below explaining the process.
  1. Go to https://uupdump.net/
  2. Search for Windows 11 Arm
  3. Select the latest build for arm64
  4. Select Language on which you would like installer and Windows
  5. Pick Windows edition you would like
  6. Set download method to Download and convert to ISO and click on Create download package
  7. Extract downloaded content into win11 folder and go into it
  8. Double click on uup_download_windows.cmd
  9. On the security warning screen click on More info and then on Run anyway
  10. Wait for the process to finish completely
  11. Once the process is finished, press 0 to close the prompt

Installing image on microSSD or SSD

  11. Check your setting on the installation overview and if everything is ok click on install
  12. Wait for the whole process to be finished
  13. Once the process is completed, close Windows on Raspberry imager, take out SSD or microSSD card from PC and connect it on your Pi along with Pi peripherals.

In order to actually use Windows 11 on our Raspberry Pi we now have to set up the Windows 11 install using the standard post-installation setup sequence.
  1. Power up Pi and press ESC when prompted
  2. Go to Device manager and press ENTER
  3. Select Raspberry Pi Configuration
  4. Select Advanced configuration

The list is written from most simple solutions to more complex ones and it is advisable to follow it as presented. That being said, let's dive into solving the problem.

1. Remove Write Protection on SD card

First and in my experience the most usual thing preventing deleting, copying files, and formating SD card is due to write protection. Take an SD card out of the laptop, camera, or card reader and visually inspect it. On side of almost every SD card, there is a hardware lock switch and mark where it needs to be positioned in order to be locked. Even if the switch is positioned on unlocked state, switch it to locked and then back to unlocked. Sometimes this easy moving of switch can resolve some contact issues and the card will start working normally. Another type of lock that could be turned ON is a software one. If for any kind of reason data protection has been turned ON, you will need to turn it off in order to be able to format an SD card. In order to do this follow this guide:
  1. Press ⊞ WINDOWS + R to open the Run dialog
  2. In run dialog type in diskpart and press ENTER
  3. Once diskpart is opened in command prompt type in: list disk and press ENTER
  4. Locate your SD card and type in select disk x, where x is disk number followed by ENTER
  5. After the SD card is selected type in: attributes disk clear read-only and press ENTER
This process will clear the software lock on the SD card, after following this method try to format the card again, if the problem still exists go to the next solution.

2. Format SD card using Command prompt

Command prompt is a great tool and can perform some commands that are not been able to be completed using file explorer or another tool inside Windows.
  1. In the taskbar search box, search for cmd and select the Command prompt
  2. On the right part select run as administrator
  3. If needed click on YES on UAC prompt
  4. Inside command prompt type in diskpart and press ENTER
  5. type in list disk followed by ENTER
  6. Select your SD card by locating its number in the list and typing select disk X, where is X SD cards number in list and press ENTER
  7. Once SD card is selected type in format fs=ntfs quick and press ENTER
This should format SD card but if for reason even this step is provided as unproductive, go to the next solution.

3. Format your card with the Disk Management tool

  1. Go into the taskbar and search for Disk Management and open it
  2. Select SD card partition that you wish to format
  3. Right-click on the partition and select format
  4. After the format is done, enter the volume label, file system, and allocation unit size. Confirm with OK
  5. Press OK again to confirm the formatting process.
If you have not managed to format your SD card even with this method go to the next solution.

4. Repartition card with Disk part

If all previous solutions have failed there is a chance that the SD card has bad sectors on it. If this is the case that we will need to partition cards in order to isolate bad sectors and use healthy ones.
  1. Press ⊞ WINDOWS + R to open the Run dialog
  2. In run dialog type in diskpart and press ENTER
  3. Once diskpart is opened in command prompt type in: list disk and press ENTER
  4. Locate your SD card and type in select disk x, where x is disk number followed by ENTER
  5. Type in Clean and press ENTER
  6. Type in Create partition primary and press ENTER
  7. To select a new partition type select partition 1 followed by ENTER
  8. Make partition active by typing active and pressing ENTER
  9. Format the drive by typing format fs=ntfs label=SDCard quick followed with ENTER
  10. Assign a letter to drive by typing assign letter=h followed with ENTER
  11. Type exit to close Command prompt followed again by ENTER and open File Explorer to check if the drive is active

5. Try a dedicated SD card formating fool

  • Click on Apply/OK and restart your PC. (This will put your PC into a Clean Boot State. And configure Windows to use the usual startup, just simply undo the changes.)
  • Now try to run System Restore again and see if the process goes smoothly.

Option 5 – Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

You might also want to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter as it could also help in fixing the problem with System Restore. To run it, go to Settings and then select Troubleshoot from the options.
