RebateInformer Hijacker removal guide for windows

RebateInformer is a browser extension for Google Chrome. This extension monitors the web pages the user is visiting and checks against an affiliate database for various rebates and coupons related to the context of the products being shown in the browser.

This extension analyzes websites your browser visits and attempts to find deals associated with the merchant’s product offerings. If an offer is found, it is injected into the deals page even if it's sold by a different merchant at a higher price.

Several anti-virus scanners have marked this extension as Potentially Unwanted, and due to its data mining behavior, it is not recommended to keep it on your computer.

About Browser Hijackers

Browser hijacking is regarded as the web’s constant problem that targets web browsers. It is a type of malicious software that alters your web browser’s settings and redirects you to sites or webpages that you had no intention of visiting. Browser hijacker malware is created for numerous reasons. It redirects you to the sponsored sites and injects adverts on your internet browser that helps its creator generate ad revenue. It could seem naive, but the majority of these websites are not legitimate and may pose a serious threat to your online safety. Additionally, hijackers can make the whole infected system fragile – other dangerous malware and viruses will use these opportunities to intrude into your computer system effortlessly.

Browser hijacking symptoms

There are many different symptoms that indicate the web browser has been highjacked: your browser’s home page is suddenly different; new bookmarks pointing to porn websites are added to your bookmarks; the default internet search engine and the default browser settings are modified; unsolicited new toolbars are added to your browser; numerous pop-up adverts show up and/or your browser pop-up blocker is disabled; your web browser starts running slowly or displays frequent errors; you’re blocked to access the websites of computer security solution providers.

How browser hijacker infects computers

There are several ways your PC could become infected with a browser hijacker. They usually arrive through spam e-mail, via file-sharing networks, or by a drive-by-download. They also come from add-on applications, also called browser helper objects (BHO), browser extensions or toolbars. Sometimes you may have inadvertently accepted a browser hijacker as part of an application package (generally freeware or shareware). An example of some notorious browser hijacker includes Conduit, Anyprotect, Babylon, DefaultTab, SweetPage, Delta Search, and RocketTab, however, the names are continually changing.

Browser hijackers could record user keystrokes to collect potentially valuable information that leads to privacy concerns, cause instability on systems, drastically disrupt the user experience, and eventually slow down the computer to a point where it becomes unusable.

Browser hijacker removal

Some browser hijacking can be simply stopped by finding and removing the corresponding malware software through your control panel. Unfortunately, many of the software packages utilized to hijack a web browser are deliberately built to be hard to detect or remove. Furthermore, manual removals require in-depth system knowledge and thus could be a very difficult job for novice computer users.

Professionals always suggest users remove any malicious software including browser hijacker by using an automatic malware removal tool, which is better, safer, and quicker than the manual removal technique. Safebytes Anti-Malware features a state-of-the-art anti-malware engine to help you prevent browser hijacker infection in the first place, and mop up any existing problems. And employ a PC optimizer to erase all associated files in the registry and fix browser problems.

Can’t Install Safebytes Anti-malware due to the presence of a Virus? Try This!

Malware can cause all sorts of damage once they invade your system, from stealing your personal information to deleting data files on your computer. Some malware sits in between the computer and the net connection and blocks a few or all internet sites that you would like to visit. It could also block you from the installation of anything on your system, especially the anti-malware program. If you’re reading this right now, you’ve perhaps recognized that a malware infection is the real cause of your blocked web traffic. So how to proceed when you want to install an anti-virus application such as Safebytes? Refer to the instructions below to eliminate malware by alternate methods.

Download the software in Safe Mode with Networking

In Safe Mode, you can actually modify Windows settings, uninstall or install some applications, and get rid of hard-to-delete viruses. If the malware is set to load automatically when the computer boots, shifting into this mode may prevent it from doing so. In order to enter into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking, press F8 while the computer is booting up or run MSConfig and find the “Safe Boot” options under the “Boot” tab. As soon as you reboot into Safe Mode with Networking, you could download, install, and update the anti-malware program from there. After installation, run the malware scanner to remove standard infections.

Obtain the anti-malware software using an alternate web browser

Web-based malware can be environment-specific, targeting a particular web browser or attacking specific versions of the web browser. The ideal solution to avoid this issue is to choose a browser that is renowned for its security measures. Firefox contains built-in Malware and Phishing Protection to keep you secure online.

Install anti-malware on a thumb drive

Here’s another solution which is using a portable USB antivirus software that can check your system for malicious software without needing installation. Do these simple steps to clean up your infected PC by using a portable antivirus.
1) Download Safebytes Anti-Malware or MS Windows Defender Offline onto a virus-free computer.
2) Connect the USB flash drive to a USB port on the clean computer.
3) Double-click the Setup icon of the anti-malware program to run the Installation Wizard.
4) Choose the drive letter of the flash drive as the place when the wizard asks you where you want to install the antivirus. Follow activation instructions.
5) Transfer the USB drive from the uninfected computer to the infected PC.
6) Double-click the anti-malware program EXE file on the USB flash drive.
7) Hit the “Scan Now” button to begin the virus scan.

Malware Guide: How to Remove Webguard

What is Webguard?

Developed by Interesting Solutions, Webguard is a tool supposedly used for tracking those online who’ve developed a habit of tracking you. The application would provide logical analysis into a user’s website history, providing insight on what websites you’ve visited and also how persons are able to track your every move while browsing. While Webguard is unable to dispose of who specifically is tracking your computer usage, they’re able to determine what computer installed tracking codes or cookies on your computer system. In this case, it’s then left up to the user’s discretion to determine who they want to allow or block from tracking their online use.  Overall, this application allows the user some measure of freedom and control over their online experience. Like any other application, however, which has landed themselves a spot on Virus Total, Web guard has hidden agendas. At a distance, Webguard installs a service for Windows but later distributes advertisements. Technical details about Webguard include:
Product Version: 1.0.0.0 Original File Name: crss.exe Entry Point:  0x000C5AAE

Assessment of Webguard Potentially Unwanted Program

While Webguard claims to track your computer usage, information reported by the application isn’t sufficient for the common computer user. This brings us back to the ulterior motive or principal objective of developing Webguard – to advertise and generate revenue from clicks made by users on Ads displayed on Internet Browsers – namely Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox. Why should a computer user remove Webguard? Simply, it compromises one's Internet privacy and security and it keeps abreast of your Internet history. If you’re online for an extended period, you’ll see what Webguard does. While the publishers behind the application did not alert users to the use of web beacons, cookies for tracking, and other related tracking technology, that’s not why Webguard is considered unwanted. The program is potentially unwanted because of the unpredictable advertisements it displays. Not all sites are trusted and so it’s difficult to determine, in some cases, what websites are legit for business.

Remove Webguard with Spyhunter

In most cases, at least from what I’ve seen, Webguard is installed as a single application. After it was installed for this assessment, it could be found in ‘All Programs”. This meant that one could manually delete the application from their computer system (see manual steps below). However, is that really sufficient to completely rid your PC of Webguard’s blueprints? While you might opt to remove Webguard manually – maybe because it’s more economical – an automated process is able to completely eradicate hidden threats from Webguard. In comparison to manually removing Webguard, Spyhunter penetrates your computer system for all infections. In most cases, nasty threats are unable to be removed manually. Additionally, Spyhunter not only removes installed threats, but it detects incoming ones – hence, acting as a preventative tool. Furthermore, Spyhunter detects cookies placed on your computer by Webguard. These are all undetectable threats and so an automated tool, as Spyhunter, should be used to remove Spyhunter effectively from your computer.

Manual Steps for Removal of Webguard

I found this removal pretty simple. Depending on your Operating System, there will be slight discrepancies in the manual removal steps. Using the Windows 8 (8.1) OS on your computer:
  • Step 1: Locate the CONTROL PANEL on your computer using the SEARCH option.
  • Step 2: Once the search box appears , input 'CONTROL PANEL'.
  • Step 3: The Control Panel option will then appear. From the menu, choose the "Programs" option.
  • Step 4: Another menu will appear. Select "All Programs and Features".
  • Step 5: From the 'Programs list', search for the Webguard application.
  • Step 6: Right-click on Webguard when it's found.
  • Step 7:  Choose the "Uninstall" option.
  • Step 8:  Follow the uninstall wizard instructions until the Webguard application is fully removed.

These programs often block gaming applications and software like GameGuard and because of that, you are unable to play online games on your system. Method 3 - Clean and Repair the Registry

The error 115 may also occur because of the registry issue with Symantec. Follow these steps to enable the game to run:

  • Look in the list for SysPlant and click it. Then look for the word 'Start', right-click on Start, and select rename.
  • Rename 'start' to 'DWORD: 00000004’ then close Regedit and reboot your PC to activate changes.

Potential issues with DRM and Alder Lake
We are all waiting for the release of Intel’s Alder Lake series of processors and real-world results on its performance. Sadly lately it came to our attention that some games might have issues with the processor. alder lake cpuNow before you go on the bandwagon on bashing Intel itself take note that it is not Intel’s fault at all. The issue that arises is mostly due to DRM software and how it works. As you might know or not, Alder Lake has two sets of cores, standard performance cores, and power cores, and with Intel’s Thread Director on-chip right cores will be used for the right tasks, and here lies the issue. DRM software might detect Thread Director as something suspicious and malicious, and then cut access to the game because of this. Intel, of course, has reached DRM manufacturers and places documentation about how software should be developed with this hybrid technology in mind. Of course, newer games will be updated if needed and everything will work fine, also games on GOG will work fine because of GOG’s policy of no DRM store but some older ones might be left in limbo. They could work fine but DRM might be triggered and prevent them from loading, usually, game developer itself removes DRM protection after some time but that is not really always the case and there is a chance that some games might simply just not work on Alder Lake CPU only because of DRM protection.

Conclusion

I will admit that I have not been a great fan of DRM in general, I understand that game developer want to protect themselves from piracy but how it looks they were not really successful with it. Even today single-player games get pirated on the day they are released and legally bought ones always make trouble for people that actually paid for them. I remember times when DRM was awful and you could install a game a limited number of times, luckily this was removed but it seems that many old habits still remain sadly and DRM is present even today in various forms. GOG is proof that people will buy DRM-free games and that they will support this kind of model. Maybe it is time to forget about fighting against piracy, you will not make it go away and people who do not want to buy games will not buy them, on other hand many users that do buy games, if they cannot use them they will rest to pirated version since that one will work. It is sad to see that pirated software can work better than a legal one and offer a more pleasant experience.

Fix INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005 atidxx64.dll
If your Microsoft Edge browser encountered a Stop Error that says, “INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005 (atidxx64.dll)” in your Windows 10 computer, then this indicates that your Graphics card driver is outdated. According to security experts, Microsoft has already acknowledged the problem and stated that this issue exists with Windows 10 v1809, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server version 1809. Although there is no direct way to resolve the problem, there are still some workarounds you can try. If you are using a RadeonHD2000 or HD4000 series video card, the update will be blocked for you. Some users also claim to experience performance issues with the lock screen or the ShellExperienceHost. However, if you are using AMD, the problem is that it no longer supports Radeon HD2000 and HD4000 series graphics processing units or GPUs. Even though Microsoft is already working for a way to resolve the problem, here are some alternative solutions you can check out:

Option 1 – Update your Graphics card drivers

  • First, boot your computer into Safe Mode.
  • After that, tap the Win + R keys to launch Run.
  • Type in devmgmt.msc into the box and tap Enter or click OK to open the Device Manager.
  • After that, a list of device drivers will be displayed. From there, look for the Display Adapters and click on them.
  • After that, right-click on each entry under the Display Adapters and select the “Uninstall Device” option from the menu.
  • Now restart your computer.
  • After restarting your computer, go to the Settings app and Check for Updates in the Windows Update section.
Note: You also have the option to go directly to the website of your graphics card manufacturers like NVIDIA, Intel or AMD and go to the section called Drivers then check if there’s a new available update – if there is, download and install it.

Option 2 – Try removing AMD Radeon HD2000 and HD4000 drivers

Although this is not exactly a perfect solution, removing AMD drivers will make the operating system fall back to the default GPU available on your motherboard. You also have the option to completely disable the hardware.
  • Tap the Win + X + M keys to open the Device Manager.
  • Next, look for your Graphics card drive, and under Display Adapters, right click on them and click Uninstall device or Disable device.
  • After that, restart your computer. This will disable the AMD drivers so you won’t be able to find them. It will also release the Windows 10 v1809 update on your computer and in case your operating system tries to prompt you with the “New Device found” message, simply ignore it.

Option 3 – Try to use another browser

You might want to use another browser especially when you already updated your computer and Microsoft Edge still keeps on crashing. You can use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and other browsers as alternatives until you sort out the problem.

Option 4 – Try to remove the Graphics card physically

You might also want to try removing both AMD Radeon HD2000 and HD4000 as they are very old graphics cards. And since AMD is not going to roll out anything, at least on its own if your motherboard has an onboard GPU, it would be best to get rid of the cards. After that, install the Windows v1809 update and then put them back in. You also have the option to install the driver but just don’t use Microsoft Edge.

How to be a healthy PC gamer

Spending a large amount of time working or gaming in front of the computer can take a toll on your health. And as someone who indeed spends a large amount of time in front of the computer, I would like to share some insights about how can you be happy and healthy at the same time by incorporating some practices and habits.

gaming

Get good chair

This is first on the list because it matters the most. A proper sitting chair is essential for back health. If your budget allows it, do yourself a favor and get an anatomic sitting chair or gaming chair with lumbar support. It costs but it is worth it.

Learn to sit properly

As the important chair is, sitting properly is also as important as much. Your spine believe it or not is a very important part of your body and you need to take care of it. Sadly long periods of sitting sessions are bad for muscles around the spine that could reflect on the spine itself. Keep your back straight and keep your head not down nor up, place it in a position like when you are walking so the spine that is going from your head is in line with the spine on your back.

Stretch

By medical standards, each hour of sitting should be accompanied by a stretch session since sitting itself is placing too much pressure on certain muscles and blood circulation is lowered. Changing leg position and doing just a little stretch each hour can be really beneficial for your health in long run.

Take breaks

Yes, playing games is fun and most of the time we do not want to stop playing, especially if we are winning but taking breaks is essential for your personal health. Old saying goes that overdoing anything is bad and this applies true even to things that we do for pleasure and relaxation. Take periodic breaks to stretch, stand up and maybe even walk just a little.

Drink water

During long work hours or long gaming sessions, it is not uncommon that we are so focused on our activity that we forget to take our water intake. Approximately 2liters of water per day is needed for an adult person to function properly during that day and if you spend long times in front of a PC do not forget to drink water.

Do not neglect your daily tasks

As enjoyable as it is gaming can make us forget about our daily tasks, do not neglect your life and your tasks. Remember, gaming is only OK if it does not interfere with the daily things that you need to do. Do not postpone going for groceries because of gaming, do not switch shower for another level in the game. Do all of the things you must do first and then sit and game.

Take care of yourself mentally

Having mental health is as important as having a physical one. Playing games is fun, but playing games with someone is even better, do not forget to socialize and invite some friends so you can share some fun times together. Also, detach yourself from outcomes that will come because of gaming, this is very important for gamers that do a lot of PVP games and get annoyed and angry when they lose or when some other player is talking trash. Remember, gaming is for you to relax and enjoy, not to stress you.
